The Co-Op Live Arena is set to become Europe’s largest indoor sports venue when it opens. However, the 23,500-capacity venue has been plagued by problems since its planned opening last month.

A spokesperson for the venue said last night’s A Boogie Wit da Hoodie concert was cancelled after an object – believed to be part of an air conditioner – fell from a gantry inside the arena during soundcheck. No one was injured.

Peter Kay was due to open the venue last month with a series of concerts on April 23 and 24. However, the concerts were moved to the following week before being postponed again to May 23 and 24.

The Co-op also had to move the Black Keys concert to May 15. A statement at the time said: “Since making the difficult decision to postpone the Co-op Live concerts that were due to take place this week, we have implemented a comprehensive testing protocol of critical procedures to ensure all areas are ready for fans. To ensure we can deliver all concerts safely, we have unfortunately had to make the decision to reschedule the scheduled Black Keys and Peter Kay concerts.

“The Black Keys and Peter Kay have graciously agreed to reschedule their concerts. The Black Keys will now perform on May 15, 2024, and Peter Kay will now perform on May 23-24, 2024.

“All tickets remain valid and ticket holders will be contacted by their point of purchase. Refunds will be available for those who are no longer able to attend the match. We are deeply aware of the impact this will have on enthusiastic fans and sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this change may cause.

“Peter Kay and the Black Keys’ postponement will give us the additional time we need to continue to thoroughly test enhanced emergency communications. This is critical to meeting the rigorous set of guidelines and protocols required for a venue of this size to ensure our fans, artists and staff have the safest possible experience.”
