Top SPM 10A students denied university entry should consider Sarawak University of Technology, says State Minister

SIBU, July 8 — Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) students who obtained at least 10As and whose application for admission to the bachelor’s degree or public university foundation programmes was rejected are invited to apply to the University of Technology Sarawak (UTS).

Making the call, Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee said these students should immediately seize the opportunity to continue their studies locally.

“I’m not saying they can’t appeal, but it’s important to remember that the process can take some time and there’s no certainty that their appeal will be successful.

“Why not take advantage of the opportunity that is presented to you? Besides, UTS is a public university.

“I invite them to join the UTS foundation (programme) which is completely free and they can study with peace of mind without being burdened financially,” said Dr Annuar, President of UTS.

Another added benefit of studying at UTS, he added, is that the university is located closer to his hometown.

“The cost of living here is also low and after completing your foundation programme you can continue to study at UTS for degree courses.”

Dr Annuar said Prime Minister Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg had earlier announced that the Sarawak government would provide free education to more than 25,000 potential students in all Sarawak-owned universities and tertiary institutions (IPTs) from 2026.

“So look no further, come and study at UTS,” he said.

Meanwhile, commenting on Sarawak DAP president Chong Chieng Jen’s statement on Saturday that the party would help these students appeal to the Education Ministry, Dr Annuar dismissed it as a “gimmick”.

Instead, he said his approach was more pragmatic.

“If students follow Chong’s advice and appeal, they are still not sure of getting a place. But if they follow my advice, they will get the offer immediately.”

Dr Annuar believes these SPM students are the cream of the crop and by joining UTS they could help put the university on the map.

He added that UTS offered studies up to PhD level and prided itself on the high employability rate of its graduates. — The Borneo Post
