China urges US to stop smearing China, contribute to cyberspace security

BEIJING, July 8 (Xinhua) — China urges the United States to stop smearing and slandering China, act responsibly and contribute to peace and security in cyberspace, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said Monday.

Spokesperson Lin Jian made the remarks at a daily press briefing when asked to comment on a report recently released by the National Computer Virus Emergency Response Center, the National Engineering Laboratory for Computer Virus Prevention Technology and the 360 Digital Security Group. According to the report, the United States has been promoting a hacking organization called “Volt Typhoon” since 2023 and engaged in a global disinformation campaign against China.

Lin said that in April last year, relevant Chinese agencies exposed the scandal that the United States had blamed China for “Typhoon Volt” in order to advance its own geopolitical agenda.

The latest report further revealed that the disinformation campaign was designed by the National Security Agency (NSA) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), as well as other members of the U.S. intelligence community, with the participation of China hawks in Congress and several federal agencies, as well as cybersecurity agencies of other Five Eyes countries, and was aimed at manipulating public opinion, Lin said.

“To this day, the US still owes us an explanation after the report was released,” Lin said, adding that the NSA chief continued to spread false information about the “Volt Typhoon.”

“Even worse, the latest report revealed that the US government pressured a cybersecurity firm and asked them to rewrite their technological analysis that proves that ‘Volt Typhoon’ is a ransomware group,” Lin added, emphasizing that this is a clumsy cover-up tactic that has not worked and will not work.

Lin said China strongly condemns the irresponsible behavior of the United States.

“The United States still owes us an explanation and must immediately stop smearing and smearing China. We urge the United States to act responsibly and contribute to cyberspace peace and security,” he said.
