A teenager was punched in the face by a police officer at Manchester Airport after his mother became involved in a mid-flight argument, it has been claimed.

Shocking footage shows 19-year-old Mohammed Fahir’s head being stamped on by a police officer, sparking huge protests.

Police say three officers were assaulted before that, including a female officer who suffered a broken nose.

The cause of the incident has not been confirmed by police, but sources say Fahir and his brother Amaad were defending their mother before being taken into custody.

A family source claimed Fahir and Amaad’s mother was involved in an altercation with a male passenger while flying from Pakistan to Manchester on Tuesday evening.

The source said that once on the ground, the same man pushed the mother with his trolley and made racist remarks as she collected her luggage at Terminal 2.

As she met her two sons, the woman pointed out the man she had argued with, the source told The Telegraph.

The couple then allegedly confronted the man, which escalated into a physical altercation.

Police were then called to the airport and followed the family on cameras before arresting them near the cash machines.

The source told the Telegraph that the mother was punched in the face by an officer, a claim that has not been independently verified.

Greater Manchester Police have not released any body camera footage of the encounter.

Police said that at that point the officers were assaulted and “knocked to the ground.”

GMP confirmed that three officers required hospital treatment, including a female officer who suffered a broken nose.

It was only after this point that footage was released of what happened, showing Fahir lying on the ground with his hands behind his back and Amaad sitting on a chair.

Clips show a police officer kicking Fahir in the face before stomping on his head before he and his brother are led away.

A woman could be seen kneeling over him as two officers pointed their tasers at him.

A police officer has been suspended from all duties following a “thorough review of further information”, GMP has confirmed.

Police also said they had contacted the police watchdog IOPC.

Fahir’s lawyer has since claimed the teenager “has a cyst on his brain.”

Lawyer Akhmed Yakoob said: “A scan revealed a cyst on his brain, so pray for his well-being.

“Our main concern right now is that the family gets justice and that this doesn’t happen again.”

The now viral video sparked outrage, with protesters taking to the streets of Manchester again last night.

Scenes of unrest in the city took place after Mayor Andy Burnham insisted: “It’s not a clear-cut situation.”

Around 200 people gathered outside the mayor’s office on Oxford Road on Thursday evening and marched through the city centre in their second night of protests.

The march caused traffic chaos in the city centre as protesters filled the streets.

Some also staged a sit-in on the tram tracks, leaving public transport vehicles stranded.

Mr Burnham said last night: “The Deputy Mayor and I have now had the opportunity to meet with the Home Secretary and the regional director of the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

“It was agreed that the IOPC investigation currently underway will be conducted as expeditiously as possible, will involve community stakeholders and will be truly independent.

“The precise modalities will be defined by the IOPC.

“I hope this will give people further reassurance that all appropriate steps are being taken, that all relevant issues will be fully considered and give them confidence in the process as it moves forward.”

Meanwhile, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said it was “extremely important” that an investigation into the footage could be carried out “promptly” and “thoroughly” as she expressed “deep concern” over the incident.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said he understood the “concern” over the footage and that Home Secretary Yvette Cooper was meeting Mr Burnham to discuss the video.

IOPC Regional Director Catherine Bates said: “We can confirm that we are independently investigating the level of force used by a Greater Manchester Police officer in relation to an incident in which a number of men were arrested at Manchester Airport on Tuesday 23 July.

“We have been informed by the police that the officer has now been suspended from all duties.

“We are aware that the images shared on social media have caused widespread shock and concern.

“It is essential that we investigate all the circumstances surrounding the incident. We are independent of the police and our investigation will be thorough and rigorous.

“Our investigations are at an early stage, but we have already obtained a significant amount of body camera footage and CCTV footage which will be subject to detailed analysis.

“We understand that people want answers and we will work to provide them with those answers as quickly as possible.

“Updates will be provided as our investigation progresses.”
