After some shady dealings, stockbroker Saccard is determined to get out of poverty and restore his reputation. He has such a bad reputation that few people, not even his own brother, want to have anything to do with him. Yet, against all odds, he manages to create a bank. Using straw men and secret knowledge of the course of the war, Saccard inflates the bank’s shares to feed his sordid desire for speculation. Unfortunately, false successes rarely last. The surviving material is a fragment.
