Protest: We will take measures if the situation worsens, warns the armyThe Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) has said the military will intervene if the nationwide protests against bad governance continue to turn violent. Addressing a press conference in Abuja today, August 2, the army chief called on the protesters to recognise that destruction is counterproductive and will only sideline the nation. We must understand that these destructions and funds must be used to develop these things so that we can move forward, and so instead of doing that, we should come together to ensure that nothing is destroyed. The statement has already been forwarded to local, state and federal governments. We want to warn those who are recalcitrant, those who will not listen, that we will not sit back and watch our country destroyed. We will take action, and the action we take will be professional. Anybody caught will be charged to court to face trial. Let us avoid anything that could cause chaos in our communities. We saw the level of destruction that was done yesterday, so you can imagine if it continues for so long. The armed forces and the entire military security agencies will not sit back and watch this situation continue. The military chief also asked the media to reduce coverage of the protests, saying some protesters were just looking for screen time. I noticed throughout yesterday that all the stations were tuned to this occasion. This is not an election, don’t give them that coverage because some of them are just looking for screen time. he said. The protest for an end to bad governance that started across the country on Thursday, August 1, has witnessed massive destruction and looting of private and public properties in some states, especially in the North.
