It comes as a shocking study revealed the average child loses, damages or destroys £236 worth of school uniforms during their primary education.

I spent just £3 in Primark and kept my child entertained for hours during the school holidays – it also got us out of the house

A worrying 22% of children will lose their shoes before they reach secondary school age – with boys twice as likely to lose a pair as girls.

To combat this problem, shoe retailer Deichmann has launched a ‘Back To School’ campaign, offering buy one get one free for half price on all school shoes.

Parents can also try to save money with a wide range of gastronomic offers.

More and more supermarket chains are now offering ‘kids eat free’ or ‘kids eat for £1’ deals during the holidays, meaning it’s easy to get a discounted dinner.

And many of these establishments also offer free coloring or activity packs, making them the perfect choice for keeping the kids busy on a budget when you’re feeling a little frazzled.

The Sun has compiled a list of restaurants and cafes that allow children to eat for free or at a reduced cost.

This includes Morrisons, which is also offering free breakfasts during the holidays.

And in Asda cafes, children eat for just £1, with no adults required to spend a minimum on food.

Additionally, Sainsbury’s customers can take their children to the restaurant for a pound, but parents must first purchase a main course from the café.

What help is available for parents?

Childcare can be an expensive business. Here’s how you can get help.

  • 30 hours of free childcare – Parents of three and four-year-olds can apply for 30 hours of free childcare per week.
To qualify, you usually need to work at least 16 hours a week at the national minimum wage and earn less than £100,000 a year.
  • Tax credits – For children under 20, some families may be eligible for assistance with childcare costs.
  • Childcare vouchers – If your employer offers childcare vouchers, you could benefit from up to £55 a week in tax and National Insurance savings.
You pay your child care fees before your tax contributions are deducted.
This program is open to new members until October 4, 2018, when child care vouchers are scheduled to be replaced with tax-exempt child care services.
  • Tax-free child care – Available to working families and the self-employed, for every £8 you pay in, the government will match an extra £2.
