Dodgers Player Freddie Freeman’s 3-Year-Old Son Receives Shocking Health News

Freddie Freeman’s 3-year-old son had been hospitalized for more than a week as the Dodgers first baseman, along with his teammates, fans, friends and family, waited patiently for news.

The news everyone had been waiting for finally arrived: Maximus Freeman was returning home.

“After 8 long days in the pediatric ICU, we are officially HOME!” Freddie Freeman’s wife Chelsea wrote on her Instagram account on Sunday. “Max still has a long way to go to regain his strength and learn to walk again. But we are so grateful to be reunited with our family. Thank you, God, for this miracle. Thank you also to our incredible team of doctors and nurses for taking such good care of our boy. And to our village for being so supportive of Charlie and Brandon.”

Freddie Freeman has not played for the Dodgers since being placed on the family emergency list on July 26; rookie Hunter Feduccia was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City that day to replace Freeman on the Dodgers’ active roster.

According to Chelsea Freeman’s original post, Maximus was diagnosed with transient synovitis after contracting a viral infection during the All-Star break. Freddie Freeman was selected as an alternate for the National League team for the All-Star Game in Arlington, Texas on July 15.

The follow-up message describing the events of July 26, the day Freeman left Houston, was alarming.

“Last Friday, Max rapidly declined and became completely paralyzed,” Chelsea Freeman wrote on Instagram. “We were so lucky to get him to the hospital in time for them to strengthen his lungs. Freddie was in Houston at the time and rushed to catch the first flight home. After extensive testing, Max is battling a severe case of Guillain-Barré Syndrome. A rare neurological condition that is especially rare in children.”

According to the Mayo Clinic, Guillain-Barré syndrome is a condition in which the body’s immune system attacks the nerves, causing weakness, numbness, or paralysis. The website states that Guillain-Barré syndrome can affect any age group, but the risk increases with age.

Chelsea Freeman’s latest update included a video of Max meeting his brothers, smiling, at the hospital before being released.

The Dodgers were averaging 3.8 runs per game without Freeman — more than a point below their 4.9 runs per game average for the 2024 season — before beating the Oakland A’s 10-0 on Saturday.

Before Saturday’s game, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts indicated that Freeman could return to the lineup during the team’s home series against the Philadelphia Phillies beginning Monday.

The reason behind Freeman’s imminent return is as good as anyone could have hoped.
