After handing over his reusable plastic cup, a man in Singapore was surprised to be charged S$0.20 more for his morning coffee because he hadn’t used the cafe’s glass cup.

A cup of kopi o kosong costs S$1.20 to eat in and S$1.40 to take away.

In an August 1 post on the Complaint Singapore Facebook page, the man, Seetho KF, questioned why he was charged a takeaway fee when he had provided his own cup.

“What is the reason I am charging 20 cents extra when I use my own cup?” he said. Mothership.

“I don’t pay for their paper cup, and (the staff) quoted me the same price whether it was my cup or theirs.”

When he asked the reason, the employee allegedly told him it was “her boss’s instructions,” Seetho said.

The alleged incident took place at Kimly Coffeeshop at 24 Bishan Street.

“What is the justification?”

In his Facebook post, Seetho asked what the rationale was, especially given the government’s push for recycling and waste reduction.

He added that with the cost of living increasing, he was simply trying to “reduce this unnecessary cost.”

“But this obvious speculation to the detriment of the public is exaggerated,” he said.

He also pointed out that many food stalls in Singapore offer small discounts when customers bring their own reusable containers.

Mothership reached out to Kimly Coffeeshop for comment.
