You failed to deliver the ‘new hope’ you promised – Catholic bishops criticize Tinubu

Catholic bishops in the Owerri ecclesiastical province have said reforms initiated by President Bola Tinubu have failed to bring renewed hope to Nigerians.

The bishops noted that the reforms instead led to high inflation, hunger and anger.

This is contained in the communiqué issued this weekend at the end of their two-day meeting, held at the Sacred Heart Pastoral/Retreat Centre, Orlu, signed by the President and Secretary, Bishop Lucius Ugorji and Bishop Augustine Echema, respectively.

According to the bishops, “Our nation, Nigeria, continues to face numerous social and economic challenges that are causing untold hardship to our people.

“The reforms introduced at the beginning of the current government’s term have not brought the renewed hope that was promised. On the contrary, inflation continues to soar and hunger and anger continue to grow.

“Despite the government’s calls for people to make sacrifices and endure hard times patiently, there does not appear to be a corresponding example of prudent spending by leaders at all levels of government.

Speaking on the ongoing national protest against hunger, Catholic bishops said young people are right to be angry at the deteriorating state of the nation.

The bishops said good governance and socio-economic stability will continue to elude Nigerians if there is no collective effort to strengthen political institutions.

They urged Nigerian citizens to make adjustments in the context of the difficult times facing everyone, stressing that the adjustment will include, among other things, saying no to all corrupt practices.
