Olympic Gymnastics: Simone Biles Falls on Beam and Misses Medal in Paris

Simone Biles fell off the balance beam and missed out on a medal for the first time at the Paris Olympics, while Alice d’Amato won gold.

The 27-year-old American, who won team, all-around and vault gold, lost her balance at the end of an aerial series and finished fifth in a final where half the gymnasts fell from the 10cm-wide apparatus.

Italy’s D’Amato won a resounding gold medal with a score of 14.366. China’s Zhou Yaqin took silver with a score of 14.100 and another Italian, Manila Esposito, took bronze with a score of 14.000.

Biles, who won three gold medals in Paris, still has a chance of winning another medal in Monday’s floor final (1.23pm BST).

She appeared unhappy with the crowd after her beam routine, talking animatedly to her coach and teammate Sunisa Lee.

The shouts of “Come on Simone” from a previously silent crowd as she played prompted “shushes” from others.

In his BBC television commentary, former gymnast Craig Heap said: “I have never seen Simone Biles so angry in my life.

“She wasn’t happy. Something happened in the arena.

“Simone is not happy at all. This proves that she is a human being. All the other ladies in this final made mistakes. She is not invincible.”
