Kamala Harris Announces Tim Walz as Her Running Mate

After days of speculation about her choice of vice presidential candidate, Kamala Harris has made her announcement: Tim Walz is her choice for vice president.

Today’s announcement comes days after Harris was officially nominated as the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate following a vote by party delegates. Although voting did not close until Monday, Harris had already garnered the votes needed to be nominated by Friday. Three other candidates failed to secure the signatures needed to appear on the party’s ballot.

Walz, who has been governor of Minnesota since 2019, is among a group of veteran politicians whose names have been circulating in the media for days as potential vice presidential candidates. They included Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, U.S. Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

A former educator, Walz is currently serving his second term as governor and chairs the Democratic Governors Association. He previously served 12 years in Congress, representing a conservative-leaning district.

Harris’ decision comes after she spent the weekend interviewing candidates at her Washington, D.C., residence, according to various media reports, and just in time for her to settle into her campaign with Walz ahead of the Democratic National Convention, which begins Aug. 19 in Chicago. Harris and her potential vice president are now expected to tour key swing states across the country to drum up votes for their party and against Republican nominee Donald Trump.

“I will do everything in my power to unite the Democratic Party – and to unite our nation – to defeat Donald Trump and his extreme Project 2025 agenda. We have 107 days until Election Day. Together, we will fight. And together, we will win,” Harris said in her first speech after announcing her candidacy for president.
