LEGO-inspired space bricks pave the way for lunar construction

LEGO-inspired space bricks pave the way for lunar construction

The dream of establishing permanent structures on the Moon has fascinated scientists and space enthusiasts for decades. Faced with the challenges of building in such an extreme environment, researchers are forced to innovate and explore new possibilities.

One of the most exciting advances comes from the European Space Agency (ESA), which has created LEGO-inspired 3D-printed bricks made from 4.5 billion-year-old meteorite dust.

These ESA space bricks represent an important step towards sustainable lunar construction and could pave the way for future lunar colonies.

Building on the Moon with local materials

The idea behind ESA’s space bricks is simple but revolutionary. Instead of transporting building materials from Earth, why not use resources already available on the Moon? The lunar surface is covered with a layer of rock fragments and minerals called lunar regolith, which could potentially be turned into building materials. However, the challenge is that there is very little lunar regolith available on Earth for experiments.

A creative solution: meteorite dust

ESA scientists were not discouraged by the lack of lunar materials. They came up with an innovative solution. They created a synthetic version of lunar regolith by crushing a 4.5 billion-year-old meteorite. This meteorite, discovered in northwest Africa, is rich in space materials and served as the perfect base for their 3D-printed bricks. By mixing this meteorite dust with a polylactide and a regolith mimic, the team managed to create bricks that mimic the properties of LEGO bricks.

LEGO Inspired Space Bricks

ESA’s space bricks are designed to snap and fit together like traditional LEGO bricks, allowing for a wide range of building possibilities. While they may look a little cruder and are only available in sleek space grey, their functionality remains intact. This modular design allows scientists to experiment with a variety of building techniques and structures, fostering creativity and innovation in lunar construction.

How ESA’s space bricks are sparking new ideas for building on the Moon

As ESA’s chief scientist Aidan Cowley noted: “No one has built a structure on the Moon, so it was great to have the opportunity to try out all sorts of designs and construction techniques with our space bricks.”

This playful approach not only contributes to scientific understanding, but also encourages a spirit of exploration and creativity that is essential in space engineering.
