Sreejesh arrives at TVM unaware of the cancellation of the function; Satheesan says the hockey star was insulted

Thiruvananthapuram: Olympic medallist PR Sreejesh arrived in Thiruvananthapuram unaware that the reception organised for him had been cancelled by the Kerala government.

Sreejesh and his family reached Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday, hoping that the hockey star’s graduation ceremony would take place on Monday. However, officials decided to postpone the programme on Saturday evening, but Sreejesh was not informed about it. He came to know about the cancellation only when he reached the capital. After the news, he decided to return home with his family.

“I am not going to react to the situation at the moment,” Sreejesh told Mathrubhumi.

According to Education Minister V. Sivankutty, since Sreejesh is the deputy director of the education department, it is the responsibility of the department to organise a felicitation ceremony for the hockey player. The minister had initially announced that the ceremony would be held on Saturday before the event was cancelled.

Meanwhile, Sports Minister V. Abdurahiman maintained that the state Sports Department was primarily responsible for the Olympic medal presentation. Due to this disagreement, the Chief Minister’s office intervened and decided to postpone the event.

There were also plans to offer jobs to Asian Games medallists in the education department as part of the event. Originally scheduled for August 24, the event was later postponed to August 26 and then finally postponed.

Opposition leader VD Satheesan alleged that “Sreejesh was insulted due to the ego tussle between the ministers”. The Congress leader said the chief minister owed the Olympic medallist an apology.
