Voter Group Organizes ‘Kentucky Party’, Announces Jill Stein’s Candidacy for President

FRANKFORT, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — On Thursday afternoon, a group of voters forming a new statewide independent party called the Kentucky Party, made up of former Kentucky Democrats and Republicans, announced a presidential candidate under their line, who will appear on the November ballot in all 120 counties.

The Kentucky Party says forming a “political party” in the state requires a presidential candidate, in this case Jill Stein of the Green Party, 5,000 signatures from registered Kentucky voters and 2 percent of the vote in November.

On Thursday, members of the Kentucky Party spoke about their decision to nominate Stein and their reasons in the Capitol Rotunda in Frankfort.

One member said it was a political party that represented the citizens of Kentucky: “The Kentucky Party is a tool, it’s meant to be used by all Kentuckians. This tool allows anyone in Kentucky to run for office without having to be a Democrat or a Republican,” said Geoff Sebesta, a member.

Meanwhile, Mohammad Ahmad, who leads the Ceasefire Now Covington coalition, is from Lexington and is also Palestinian. He spoke of the hardships his family abroad has endured because of the war. He added: “I support the new Party of Kentucky, which, as you’ve heard, stands for the true values ​​of justice and dignity that transcend politics, income, race, class and gender, because whatever differences we may have on these issues, which we will have, as human beings of course, we at least agree that Kentucky is worth fighting for, that this state is worth fighting for.”

Kentucky is the 34th state to nominate Jill Stein for president.
