Sabrina Carpenter’s 2024 MTV VMAs Hairstyle Was Inspired By Pop Royalty And Took 6 Hours To Get

Hairstylist Evanie Frausto used Redken to achieve Carpenter’s bouncy curls and blown-out bangs

A Hairstyle Like Sabrina Carpenter’s at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards work.

For the awards show, the 25-year-old singer teamed up with hairstylist Evanie Frausto, who used Redken products to achieve bouncy, “old-school” curls and voluminous bangs on the pop star. (Carpenter was recently named the hair-care brand’s first global ambassador on Sept. 9.)

If you’re wondering how to recreate the pro’s work, especially Carpenter’s bangs, know that it took hours – and a lot of hairspray – to get it just right.

“We started six hours before the glam,” Frausto shared in a press release, adding that he first put Carpenter’s iconic curtain bangs in a roller and let them “rest” in position until it was time for her to get ready.

When the hair styling process began, Frausto started with her signature blow-dry, but with a “red carpet twist” inspired by the glamour of Marilyn Monroe and Madonna.

“We cut her hair so that it rested on her shoulders. I then dampened Sabrina’s hair with water and applied Redken Volume Maximizer over it, from roots to ends, brushing it through with a round brush,” the professional explained.

To achieve the coveted volume, Frausto then placed hair rollers on sections of Carpenter’s hair. He also separated other areas around the hairline and under her top layers and used a 1-inch curling iron before switching to a smaller iron for tighter curls.

Once all the pins were out, Frausto applied Redken Dry Texture Spray and brushed her hair to “keep it soft and sexy.” Then, Redken Brushable Hairspray, a humidity-resistant, regulating mist, held it all together.

Carpenter’s hair matched her makeup, which consisted of dewy skin, rosy cheeks, a ruby ​​red lip, and velvet lashes done by Carolina Gonzalez. It also complemented her three outfits, all styled by Jared Ellner.

The former Disney star first hit the red carpet in a vintage beaded Bob Mackie gown by Tab Vintage, which was worn by Madonna at the 1991 Oscars.

She then performed a medley of “Please Please Please,” “Espresso” and “Taste” in a custom Victoria’s Secret bodysuit adorned with 18,500 crystal pearls and dazzling kiss marks, before finishing the night in a 1996 Gucci by Tom Ford lace minidress, also from Tab Vintage, for the after-party.

Carpenter’s night was as big as her hair and ended with the singer receiving her first-ever Moon Person Award for Song of the Year for “Espresso.”
