Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh receives congratulations from manager Dan Wilson

SEATTLE — It looks like Cal Raleigh is finally starting to get more recognition around the league.

The fourth-year Seattle Mariners catcher has already made franchise and league history in several different categories this season. He set the single-season RBI record by a catcher (surpassing current manager Dan Wilson) and is three home runs shy of tying Mike Piazza for the most home runs in MLB history by a catcher in their first four seasons.

And as impressive as Raleigh’s offense is, its defense isn’t far behind.

Raleigh caught two runners stealing in Seattle’s 5-4 loss Thursday to the Texas Rangers. The two outs were the 31st and 32nd runners caught stealing for Raleigh this season — the most in the league and one more than Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Will Smith.

Raleigh’s defense has been on par with its offense and Wilson mentioned that before Friday’s game against the Rangers.

“I think his accuracy and consistency in delivering the ball was really good,” Wilson said. “I thought Thursday night his pitches were really fast. He did a really good job. When you talk about throwing to runners, it’s a two-way street. And the pitchers did a really good job of keeping guys close to them on one side and giving him a chance to throw to guys. It’s a good team effort. But Cal … had a lot of stuff on those pitches yesterday. And when you can make that fast pitch, put it in a good spot, you’re going to have your share of guys (to throw out). And he’s really done that this year.”

Raleigh has given himself the opportunity to win a Gold Glove and maybe a Silver Slugger, depending on how the season goes. And sooner or later, that game could also earn him a reward in the form of a huge payday.
