Uncommitted National Movement Will Not Support Harris

The National Uncommitted Movement said in a statement provided to multiple media outlets today that it will not support Vice President Kamala Harris.

The announcement comes after Uncommitted set a September 15 deadline for Harris to meet with him over U.S. military and financial support for Israel amid mounting Palestinian casualties from its war against Hamas.

In the 2024 Democratic primary, the campaign urged voters to choose “uncommitted” on their ballot over President Joe Biden, who was running for re-election at the time, and racked up more than 500,000 votes.

“Vice President Harris’ refusal to change her unconditional arms policy or even make a clear campaign statement in support of respect for applicable U.S. and international human rights laws has made it impossible for us to support her,” Uncommitted said in a statement.

That said, Uncommitted encouraged its voters not to vote for former President Donald Trump.

HuffPost reported that the campaign said some uncommitted voters “will vote for Vice President Harris, despite their pain and grief, in order to block Donald Trump.”

In a fuller statement posted on Instagram, Uncommitted said it does not recommend its members vote for a third party, “especially since third-party votes in key states could inadvertently help secure Trump’s presidency.”

“We must block Donald Trump, which is why we urge uncommitted voters to vote against him and avoid third-party candidates who could inadvertently boost his chances,” the statement read.

When Harris became the presumptive Democratic nominee, Uncommitted called on her to “take a clear stand against weapons for Israeli war and occupation against Palestinians,” something the campaign now says she failed to do. It also collected nearly 100,000 signatures on a petition calling on Harris to enact an arms embargo.

When Uncommitted attended the Democratic National Convention last month with its 29 delegates, it staged a sit-in to protest the convention’s refusal to include a Palestinian speaker.

The speech that Georgia State Representative Ruwa Romman, who is Palestinian, planned to deliver at the convention on behalf of Uncommitted included an endorsement of Harris.

“Let’s commit to each other, to electing Vice President Harris and defeating Donald Trump for using my Palestinian identity as an insult,” Romman said, as reported by Mother Jones. “We can be a Democratic Party that prioritizes funding for our schools and hospitals, not endless wars.”

In its statement today, however, Uncommitted said its work was “never intended to support any specific candidate.”

“It has always been about building a movement that saves lives,” the statement said.
