Man charged with first-degree murder in Commerce City triple shooting

BRIGHTON, Colo. — A man has been charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of a woman in Commerce City earlier this month.

The shooting took place between 73rd and 74th Avenues East, near the intersection with Quebec Street, around 1 a.m. on September 6.

At the scene, police found three victims – two women and a man – who had been shot. The man was seriously injured but is expected to survive. One of the women was shot but her life is not in danger, according to a press release.

The other woman, Makayla Lawrence, 20, died shortly after the shooting, according to a Sept. 12 news release from the Commerce City Police Department.

A police department spokesperson said the woman was a bystander and was not at all involved in the altercation that preceded the shooting.

The suspect – Ethan Jennings, 21 – was charged Thursday by the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office with multiple counts, including first-degree murder, two counts of attempted first-degree murder, two counts of first-degree assault and four counts of felony violence.
