Trey Hall leads the charge in the weight room as Maine football strength coach

ORONO, Maine (WABI) – Trey Hall is the coach helping the Black Bears get in shape on game day.

“Every player is going to need something a little different. Generally, it’s about how to prepare them. We have to prepare them for the demands of the game. It’s a very violent, physical game. We just have to prepare them for those demands. The more prepared they are, the better they’re going to perform on the field and the more likely they are to stay healthy throughout the season,” said Hall, football’s head performance coach.

“He’s everything. He builds the program. He’s the foundation of this program. He made me 10 to 15 pounds heavier. Everything we do to run the ball, to stop the run, it all starts with him,” senior defensive back Shakur Smalls said.

Hall’s experience as a player led to his passion for bodybuilding.

“I’ve always been a football fan and I’ve always loved the weight room. I started working out at a young age and I’ve had a lot of mentors in my life that have made a big difference in terms of my performance on the field. It really comes from the weight room. Some days I’ll bring a little juice and juice to get the guys motivated, but a lot of it just comes from the team itself. They do a great job of getting going,” Hall said.

“He’s passionate. The players really enjoy being around him. I think they’re excited to go see him every day. That’s what you need in a weight room. The weight room is essential to our development,” said head coach Jordan Stevens.

Hall speaks and acts.

“I work out at least four to five times a week. It’s hard for me to ask our guys to do something if I can’t physically do it myself. I think it helps a lot when they see you working hard too. You work hard and you continue to train hard. I think that helps the guys a lot,” Hall said.

“He still lifts weights every day. He rides his bike. He rides Husker. He does all the hard workouts that we do. Maybe not when we’re out there together, but I know he does them. He tells us stories,” senior defensive lineman John Costanza said.

He has the opportunity to see that Maine’s work is bearing fruit on Saturday.

“In the fourth quarter, when teams are tired, hands on hips, leaning forward, our guys stand up and play to their advantage. They’ll say, ‘Hey, they’re not riding bikes. They’re not riding bikes.’ Seeing those little cultural things come out on the field is always a good thing,” Hall said.

The competition begins in the weight room.

The Black Bears continue their road trip through UAlbany this Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

Coach Hall will have the Maine players working hard during the upcoming bye week.
