Suspect crosses I-94 to escape Dearborn police stop, then caught by drone

DEARBORN, Mich. (FOX 2) – New video from Dearborn police shows the arrest of a suspect who fled from officers during a traffic stop – and ran across I-94 to get away.

The suspect’s quest for freedom didn’t last long: Officers tracked him down with a police drone and found him hiding in a dense, overgrown area.

On Tuesday, patrol officers stopped the man on I-94 for a traffic violation and found that the driver did not have a valid license, had warrants for his arrest and that he was currently on parole.

As officers questioned the driver, he fled and crossed 1-94 through traffic, narrowly missing being hit by a tractor-trailer and causing his hat to blow in the wind.

Officers continued the pursuit on foot and also deployed a drone. With the help of the drone, officers located the suspect hiding in a dense, overgrown area.

The suspect was taken into custody and charged with carrying a concealed weapon, criminal firearm, criminal resisting an officer and criminal possession. Officers also found a handgun and a bulletproof vest in the driver’s vehicle.

“This incident could have ended in tragedy,” Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin said. “Such behavior will not be tolerated in the City of Dearborn; we will continue to pursue and arrest dangerous suspects and charge them with appropriate crimes.

“We are fortunate to have advanced technology, including drones, to assist us in our daily operations to locate these suspects.”
