WNBA fans identify one clear area where Caitlin Clark needs to improve

Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark’s sensational first season in professional basketball came to an end Wednesday, as the Fever were eliminated from the WNBA playoffs by the Connecticut Sun.

As usual, Clark was fantastic on offense. She bounced back from a lackluster scoring effort in Game 1 on Sunday to score 25 points on 10-23 shooting from the field while adding 9 assists and 6 rebounds on Wednesday.

Clark finding her form on offense is no surprise, given what a playmaker and sharpshooter she is. Still, one play during Wednesday’s game led many fans to believe that offense shouldn’t be Clark’s biggest concern.

Connecticut’s “stab” came Wednesday when guard Marina Mabrey scored a three-pointer with 45 seconds left to give Indiana a four-point lead. Clark was supposed to guard it but appeared to fall victim to “ball sighting”, which freed Mabrey to shoot.

Clark received a lot of criticism on social media for what appeared to be a defensive mistake in central possession.

“Lmaooooo raising your hands when it was your man should be a crime πŸ˜‚πŸ˜πŸ˜‚πŸ˜πŸ˜‚,” X user @keepitplay8 wrote in response to a video of Mabrey’s photo.

“On first watch I thought she got caught going under a screen, but after watching again she was just looking at the ball lol. She wasn’t glued at all to her man…”, added a third.

Earlier in the game, ESPN commentator Rebecca Lobo also criticized Clark for not dropping back on defense during a transition opportunity with Sun, costing her team an easy basket.

It will be interesting to see how much Clark improves on defense during her second WNBA season.
