Dothan college cross country runner dies after collapsing during competition

MACON, Ga. (WTVY) – A college cross country runner from Dothan has died after collapsing during a competition last weekend in Georgia.

According to local reports from WGXA and WMGT, Nefertari Holston, 23, of Dothan, Alabama, died during Saturday’s competition.

Holston was a distance runner for Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia.

She was competing in the MGA/Julius Johnson Invitational at Middle Georgia State University in Macon.

Macon-Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones told WGXA that Holston went into cardiac arrest and was rushed to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Temperatures in the area reached the mid-90s on Saturday, but it’s unclear if the heat was a contributing factor.

Authorities announced that an autopsy would be performed.
