Rip current declaration affecting Atlantic County through Sunday evening

A rip current statement was issued by the National Weather Service at 4:58 a.m. Sunday, in effect until 8 p.m. for Atlantic County.

“At this level, flooding begins on the most vulnerable roads in coastal and bayside communities, as well as along inland tidal waterways. Some partial or full road closures are possible. Rip currents may take even the best swimmers from the shore to deeper waters,” the weather service describes. “If travel is necessary, allow extra time as some roads may be closed. Do not drive around barricades or into water of unknown depth. Take necessary steps to protect properties subject to flooding. Swim near a lifeguard. If you are caught in a rip current, relax and float. Do not swim against the current. If possible, swim in a direction that follows the shore. and call or signal for help.
