Tesla car crashes and catches fire

PARIS (AP) — Four people died in a car crash in France after their Tesla vehicle crashed into a road sign and caught fire, police said Monday.

A local police spokesman, Lieutenant Eric Hoarau, said the exact circumstances of the accident on Saturday night near the city of Niort had not yet been determined and an investigation was ongoing.

“Everything suggests that (the vehicle) left the road,” Hoarau said, citing marks on the ground and a cut road sign.

There were no witnesses, he said, which complicated the investigation.

The driver and three passengers were burned beyond recognition, he said.

Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
