The remote destination in West Virginia where the last view is worth the drive

Nestled among the breathtaking beauty of the Appalachians, Lost River State Park in West Virginia, near Mathias, offers a wonderful escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. In fact, I recently had the pleasure of visiting this, one of the most remote State Parks in West Virginiaand it was exactly the peaceful, quiet, nature-filled experience I was hoping for!

Located in Hardy County, Lost River State Park sits on a ridge between the Lost River Valley and the George Washington National Forest. The journey to reach this hidden gem is an adventure in itself, with winding roads leading to scenic vistas at every turn, all the way to the park.

I think it is one of the best state parks in West Virginia.

Originally developed in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), Lost River State Park offers a beautiful example of the carefully crafted stonework of the era, in addition to rustic log cabins and lodges that blend harmoniously with the natural environment.

With more than 3,700 acres of pristine wilderness to explore, Lost River State Park offers an abundance of activities for nature lovers of all ages. Hiking enthusiasts have plenty to choose from, with several routes of varying difficulty winding through forests and ascending to breathtaking vistas.

The picturesque view of Cranny Crow is one of the park’s standout features, both for its scenic view of five counties and for its picturesque and historic stone shelter.

While I visited, I also enjoyed exploring the peaceful meadow where the Lee House and nearby Lee Sulfur Spring are located.

After a day of exploring and enjoying the park’s natural wonders, Lost River State Park offers a variety of lodging options. Whether you prefer camping under the stars or renting a luxury or pioneer cabin, you are assured of a rewarding stay.

The night I spent in a classic pioneer cabin, I thoroughly enjoyed falling asleep to the sound of a whippoorwill perched just outside my door.

There’s a lot to be said for the simple and largely unspoiled beauty that Lost River State Park preserves. It reminds us that in our modern world there are still pockets of wild forest waiting to be explored, where time passes more slowly and nature takes center stage.
