Galen: A friend of mine recently said he’s “nauseously optimistic” and I feel the same way, Greg. Some of these things where it’s 50-50, I don’t know the methodology, if they’re asking leaners to make a decision, but Trump never really used a 46 or 47 percent ceiling. Electorally, and given the numbers, I don’t see him being able to do that this time. Kamala Harris should win by the numbers, if nothing else. She should win based on the numbers in many of these states, especially in the upper Midwest, because there are more decent, and I say pro-democracy because that’s where I live in the world, voters who might disagree everything with Kamala Harris, but certainly does not want Donald Trump back. And honestly, we have had the baby boomer generation in power since 1993. There are many people who just say: You know what, let’s turn the page. When you combine that with a lot of younger voters who don’t want anything to do with Donald Trump, I think in the end, Greg, it’s going to be the women who are going to save us. It will be women of all ages, all demographics, all regions, all geographies who will ultimately say in large numbers: We don’t want anything to do with this man anymore, and to punish the Republican Party for it Dobbs and what they did.

Sargent: What are the prospects of her reaching 49, 49.5, while Trump remains at 47, 48? And is that the way to winning?

Galen: I think it is. I think this is the path for Harris to get close to 50 in a lot of these. The conclusion is probably that she wins the popular vote. But then again, I just think the numbers are ultimately on her side. There are more voters available for Harris. I spend most of my time here knocking on doors and speaking to groups of volunteers. The people I see are excited. They’re there because they want to, not because they’re getting paid, Greg. Campaigns matter at the margins, and right now the Harris campaign on the ground and the Democrats on the ground and allied groups like us on the ground have a lot more energy, they have a lot more infrastructure, and so much more. of far more resources than Trump, who pays Elon Musk, no matter how much money it is, to have Ron DeSantis’ team go out and try to find voters for him, which makes no sense on several levels.
