Spirit Lake man convicted of shooting his father

SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa (KUOO) – A Spirit Lake man charged in a shooting that injured his father earlier this year was sentenced in Dickinson County District Court.

Caleb Crosby was originally charged with attempted murder and first-degree robbery in connection with the incident on May 5 of this year in Montgomery. As part of a plea deal, the attempted murder charge was amended to malicious wounding, a class “C” felony.

Judge David Lester sentenced Crosby on both counts, malicious wounding and first-degree theft, to prison terms of not more than 10 years each, to be served consecutively at the Iowa Medical and Classification Center in Oakdale, with credit for time served. Crosby could also be eligible for a reduced term for the first-degree theft charge, as determined by the Iowa Parole Board. All fines and fees were waived as part of the settlement.

Crosby has also pleaded guilty to escaping from custody, with a written sentence to be handed down separately on that charge.

During his speech, Crosby vowed to turn his life around by taking rehabilitation classes while incarcerated.
