Hartford neighbors shocked and heartbroken after nearby shooting

DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) – Just days after three people were injured in a shooting in Hartford at an event neighbors described as a party, nearby residents have had to deal with heartbreak and shock.

“I lay down and thought, It couldn’t be, because I’ve been here a year and there haven’t been any problems except just normal neighborhood stuff.” said one resident, who wished to remain anonymous.

Before this weekend’s shooting, the resident felt safe in his neighborhood along North 3rd Street.

Now she worries about the safety of her grandchildren, who often ride their bikes down the street next to the property where the shooting took place.

“For them to pass by that house repeatedly and me not knowing who is there, what is there, what is happening, that worries me. Yes, very much so,” they said.

Another resident said he woke up to five gunshots in the middle of the night. They are just teenagers, but they said this is one of the most traumatic and painful experiences they have ever been through.

They witnessed the aftermath, in which they said several people ran and screamed, and that resident heard traumatizing and graphic stories from the party, where people they knew were injured.

Geneva County Sheriff Tony Helms told News4 on Sunday that those injured in the shooting received medical care at nearby hospitals.

As of Monday morning, no suspects were in custody and the investigation was continuing.
