‘Shocked’ West Ham club offered Man United star for bargain price

West Ham got a bargain for Aaron Wan-Bissaka while Man United were desperate to see him go, according to the club’s former scout.

Mick Brown, who worked at the London Stadium until leaving alongside David Moyes in June and remains well connected at the club, exclusively told Football specialist that United had been in contact for over a year trying to sell the right-back.

Wan-Bissaka, 26, ended up moving for £15m to the London Stadium following the arrival of Julen Lopetegui as part of his defensive overhaul.

However, Brown revealed that he recommended the club sign him in 2023, with United offering his services at Premier League clubs.

Alongside Scott McTominay and Harry Maguire, Erik ten Hag decided that the former Crystal Palace player no longer had a place at his side.

The Hammers were finally able to capitalize on a cut-price deal to bring him back to London, which saw United suffer a substantial loss on his services.

Wan-Bissaka moved to Old Trafford for £50m in 2019, and Brown insisted his game has only improved since then.

During his time at Old Trafford, the right-back made 190 appearances for Man United and has played seven times under Lopetegui.

Brown, who also spent more than a decade at Old Trafford during the club’s most successful period, insisted the club could not have bought a better right-back for the price they paid.

I think it was an absolute bargain for West Ham,” he said Football insider.

“I was the one who recommended it when I was there. It was him, McTominay and Maguire.

“And it wasn’t the case that I was biased from my time at Man United, I just wanted the best players we could get for the best price.

“West Ham had an offer for Wan-Bissaka at the start of last season with a price tag of around £15m and I was shocked at that price.

“I haven’t seen many better right-backs commanding that kind of price.

“I thought the club had missed a trick when they couldn’t do it in 2023, but luckily he was still available at that price in the summer that just ended.

“To be honest, I don’t understand why United got rid of him, but West Ham had to capitalize.

“When you look at the price they paid for him at Crystal Palace, he certainly hasn’t gotten any worse since that move. I would say he improved in that period.”
