Early in-person voting is underway, which for many of us represents the light at the end of the tunnel of this long, grueling and historically close election cycle.

While every election cycle, and especially presidential elections, feel like they could last forever, most would agree that the 2024 election has played out on a different level.

During the 2020 election, many changes were made to the way votes were cast and counted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In that election, early voting and absentee voting skyrocketed in a way unprecedented in American history.

While no one wants to go back to 2020, the lessons learned and access to greater voting availability are a good thing for the future.

In the 2022 midterm elections, Michigan residents voted to pass Proposition 2, also known as “Promote the mood” which, among other things, allowed early in-person voting in state and federal elections, prepaid postage for absentee voter applications and mail-in ballots.

The passage of this proposal changed the game for Michigan voters and allowed more and more Michigan residents to have their voices heard in the elections.

Voting isn’t always easy, and while voter participation has increased in recent years, there are still many Americans who choose not to vote, or are influenced by external events that make it difficult to get to the polls on Election Day.

Anyone who has lived in the Upper Peninsula will tell you that bad weather in early November is not rare. So if you don’t want to risk weather, illness, flat tires or any other situation that could affect your ability to vote, vote early.

Many early voting locations in the area will be available starting today, including the Peter White Library in Marquette, which will be open to cast your vote every day from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
