Election stakes are ‘life and death’

MSNBC host Nicole Wallace argued that the stakes of the 2024 election are “literally life and death for every woman in America.”

At the beginning of the Monday hour from 5 p.m Deadline: White HouseWallace played commentary from former First Lady Michelle Obama in Michigan. The MSNBC host launched these comments — which were aimed at men but focused on women’s reproductive health — by stating that the livelihood of every woman in America is at stake in the 2024 election.

“Former first lady Michelle Obama doesn’t joke anymore,” Wallace said. “As women’s reproductive health care and freedoms hang in the balance next Tuesday, life and death literally hang in the balance for every woman in America. It’s not hyperbole. It’s not an exaggeration. That will happen next week.”

Wallace then played the comment from Michelle Obama:

“For the men who love us, let me try to paint a picture of what it will feel like if America, the richest country in the world, continues to withdraw basic health care from its women. And how it will affect every woman in your life.

Your friend could be in legal jeopardy if she needs a pill from out of state or overseas, or if she has to travel across state lines because the local clinic is closed. Your wife or mother may be the ones at greater risk of dying from undiagnosed cervical cancer because they do not have access to regular gynecological care. Your daughter may be the one who is afraid to call the doctor if she is bleeding during an unexpected pregnancy.

This won’t just affect women. It will affect you and your sons. The devastating consequences of teenage pregnancy will be borne not only by young girls, but also by the young men who are the fathers. They too will dream of going to college. Their entire future was turned upside down by an unwanted pregnancy.

If you and your partner are expecting a child, you will be by her side during the checks. Terrified if her blood pressure is too high or if there is a problem with the placenta or if the ultrasound shows that the embryo has been implanted in the wrong place and the doctors are not sure if they can intervene to protect the woman you love . I ask you from the core of my being to take our lives seriously. Please.”

“An incredible plea,” Wallace said as he emerged from the clip. “Asking every man in the country to think of us, the women they love, who in most cases are there when we miscarry or when something goes wrong, as she said. Michelle Obama is asking every man in this country to think about what happens if our access to health care disappears next Tuesday. Hasn’t happened yet. That is what is at stake.”
