Lokpobiri mourns victims of Jigawa tanker explosion and orders investigation – Nigeria – The Guardian Nigeria News – Nigeria and World News

The Minister of Petroleum Resources, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, has expressed deep regret over the tragic oil tanker explosion that claimed over 100 lives in Majiya town, Taura Local Government Area of ​​Jigawa State. The explosion, which also left many injured, shocked the country.

In a statement released on Wednesday by Nneamaka Okafor, Special Adviser on Media and Communications to the Minister, Lokpobiri conveyed his deepest condolences to the bereaved families.

“On behalf of the Ministry of Petroleum Resources and the Federal Government, we extend our sincerest condolences to the families and loved ones of those affected by this devastating incident. Our thoughts and prayers are with those injured and we wish them a speedy and full recovery.”

The Minister directed the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) to immediately launch a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances that led to this tragedy.

Furthermore, Lokpobiri advised Nigerians to avoid approaching vehicles carrying petroleum products that have been involved in accidents or mechanical failures. “While we understand the temptation to take advantage, the dangers of trying to collect spilled fuel cannot be overstated. The tragic loss of life in this incident serves as a grim reminder of the grave risks involved.”

The Minister also appealed to oil transporters to strictly comply with safety standards. He emphasized that only certified drivers, in full compliance with Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) regulations, should be involved in the transportation of petroleum products.

“The Ministry remains committed to ensuring the safety of Nigerians in all aspects of distribution and transportation of petroleum products. We will continue to work closely with all relevant stakeholders to apply more stringent security measures and prevent future occurrences,” he concluded.
