Kamala Harris talks about reparations with Charlamagne tha God

All of Black America was shocked when Vice President Kamala Harris sat down for an interview with one of the most polarizing sectors in the industry radio personalities, Charlamagne tha God. But to his credit, who else could extract answers from the Vice President on issues affecting the black community like he does?!

As they jumped from topics like the economy, former President Donald Trump and even the church, Harris stood her ground. But there was one pressing issue that black people finally got answers to: reparations for African Americans.

During Tuesday (October 15) “We the People: An Audio Town Hall with Kamala Harris and Charlamagne Tha God” in Detroit, Michigan, the vice president said: “As far as reparations are concerned, it has to be studied, there is no doubt about that.” Her response came after Detroit community leader Zeek Williams asked how she will ensure Black Americans are taken care of in the future and compensated for the generational harms of slavery if elected president.

While Harris also responded by saying she is “running to be a president for all Americans,” she admitted to seeing this country with “clear eyes.” What does this mean exactly? Without the free labor of enslaved black people, the United States, like us all I know it would cease to exist… obviously.

Harris went on to explain her plans to address these disparities through economic issues. “My agenda is to explore ambitions and aspirations, knowing that people who want to have an opportunity – if they want it – should have a meaningful opportunity to build wealth, including intergenerational wealth,” Harris said.

“Black families are 40% less likely to be homeowners than others,” she continued. “Homeownership is one of the surest ways to build intergenerational wealth.”

It’s no secret that Black Americans have been asking about reparations for decades. According to the Pew Research Center77 percent of black adults believe in reparations for slavery. And following the Black Lives Matter protests of 2020, conversations around reparations have only intensified.

Harris has spoken about reparations before. During her first term as president in 2019, the vice president expressed her support for studying the concept of reparations for slavery, according to NBC News. But now, she has definitively stamped the need for a proper investigation – and what’s even more important is that she said this in an interview with Charlamagne aimed at reaching black voters.

It’s obvious that Harris is weighing down the final stretch of her campaign as she continues to reach out to black voters. That means showing up to barbershops, talking to Black business owners, and speaking to Black media until we get to the finish line on Election Day on Tuesday, November 5th.
