Woman paralyzed after rabies vaccine at Alappuzha Medical College, family files complaint | Onmanorama news

Alappuzha: A 61-year-old woman, Shanthamma from Thakazhi, was reportedly paralyzed after anti-rabies vaccine administered at Government TD Medical College, Vandanam, Alappuzha. Subsequently, her family filed a complaint with the Ambalappuzha police alleging medical negligence.

Shanthamma visited the hospital on October 21 after suffering scratches on her hand from a rabbit. After a test dose of the rabies vaccine, she developed allergic reactions, as noted by her daughter Sonia in the complaint. Despite these symptoms, hospital staff continued with the full vaccination series, which reportedly worsened her condition, Sonia added.

Police said the patient lost consciousness after the vaccination and is currently under treatment, with her condition gradually improving.

Meanwhile, the Principal of the Medical College stated that Shanthamma and her husband, Soman, were informed about possible side effects and the vaccination was administered after permission was obtained. On observing symptoms of anaphylaxis, an on-duty doctor from the general medicine department provided immediate treatment to the injured area before shifting Shanthamma to the intensive care unit, officials said.

Specialists from Cardiology and Neurology were also present with her. Officials further clarified that rare, anaphylactic reactions have been associated with the Equine Rabies Immunoglobulin used in this case.
