Woman killed, man seriously injured when SUV is hit by train in Bessemer

A woman was killed and a man seriously injured when the driver of an SUV tried to outrun a train at a Bessemer railroad crossing Wednesday afternoon, police said.

Bessemer Police Det. Justin Burmeister said the incident happened around 1:00 p.m. at 32nd Street and Carolina Avenue.

The SUV was traveling west on 32nd and attempted to pass with its crossed arms down and lights flashing. The vehicle was struck by a southbound Norfolk Southern train.

Both people were thrown from the SUV. It took a mile for the train to stop.

The female was pronounced dead at the scene 50 meters from the crossing. The man was taken to UAB Hospital.

Their names were not released.
