The Laurel Student Council is holding a balloon release in celebration of Domestic Violence Awareness Month

LAUREL, Miss. (WDAM) – The Laurel High School Student Council took time Wednesday to recognize Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

The council held its annual balloon release to honor survivors and remember victims.

Students and leaders gathered on the front lawn of the high school for the occasion.

Attendees wrote a name or note on the balloon to a victim lost to domestic violence before taking to the air.

“Releasing this balloon really opened a lot of our eyes to a lot of things going on in our society today,” said D’Antony Nicholson, LHS senior/student council member.

“It shows us that it’s more about what we see with the human eye alone. It’s deeper than anything in life, period.”

The council also worked with the Laurel Police Department and the Domestic Violence Victim’s Advocate to provide students with resources and information on the issue.

“We are just here to show our support for those who have gone through this, lost their lives and those who may not have a voice right now, but we are here to let them know that we can be a voice for them” , he said. Tamia Taylor, student council advisor.

In addition to the balloon release, the student council presented a donation of detergents to the Missing Peace Ministry.
