SLED Accuses Former SC DJJ Associate Deputy of Misconduct and Assault

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) – The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) charged a former Department of Juvenile Justice (SCDJJ) employee on multiple accounts Wednesday following an altercation with a juvenile inmate.

The charges come after an incident at SCDJJ in Columbia that occurred on October 2. According to an arrest warrant, 45-year-old Deputy Adrian O’Neal Cartledge responded to a call for help for a juvenile outside his cell.

The boy was then handcuffed with his hands behind his back. After the juvenile was brought to his feet, the warrant says Cartledge intentionally struck a juvenile in the face with his right elbow. He was then taken to his cell with minor injuries.

Cartledge, who documented the incident in an SCDJJ report, is alleged to have been dishonest about the incident. Investigators confirmed this and explained that the incident was captured on the facility’s CCTV footage.

Cartledge has been charged with misconduct in office and third-degree assault and was booked into the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center in Richland County.

The case will be prosecuted by the 5th Circuit Solicitor’s Office.
