MNPD family intervention program offering ‘critical incident reports’ to those present at Jefferson St mass shooting

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) Family Intervention Program counselors are now offering “critical incident reports” to those who were present at the mass shooting on Jefferson Street.

The shooting killed one person and injured nine others over the weekend.

MNPD said traumatic incidents can affect people in different ways and people can experience different reactions to them.

These reactions include:

PHYSICAL REACTIONS

  • Aches and pains like headaches, backaches, stomachaches
  • Changes in sleep and appetite patterns
  • Constipation or diarrhea
  • Easily startled by unexpected noises or touches
  • More susceptible to colds and illnesses
  • Increased use of alcohol or drugs and/or excessive eating

EMOTIONAL REACTIONS

  • Shock and disbelief
  • Fear and/or anxiety
  • Grief, disorientation, denial
  • Hyper-alert or hypervigilance
  • Irritability, restlessness, outbursts of anger or rage
  • Emotional changes – such as crying and then laughing
  • Worrying or ruminating – intrusive thoughts about the trauma
  • Nightmares
  • Flashbacks
  • Feelings of helplessness, panic
