Found mainly in Hami province, Uyghur embroidery is rooted in Islamic civilization and inspired by Han, Manchu and Buddhist cultures. Almost all Uyghur girls master this craft to adorn their daily supplies when they are going to get married. The best expression of their ethnic characteristics can be found in the patterns on their doppas, pillows and clothes.

Many techniques make up this art. Its essence, coming from the embroidery schools of Beijing and Suzhou, includes flat, knotted, crouched and crossed stitches, as well as patterned embroidery. The Hami Uygur embroidery school offers an excellent perspective to research the diverse Uyghur cultures and has high academic value.
