Motorcyclist dies in crash in Knoxville, police say

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – A motorcyclist involved in a crash on Washington Pike on Sunday has died, according to Knoxville Police Department Communications Manager Scott Erland.

The crash happened around 5 p.m., Erland said, when a Chevy SUV veered into the motorcyclist’s path, causing him to strike the car. It happened near the Target off Greenway Drive.

“The driver was then thrown onto the roadway,” Erland said. “The light was green for both the Chevy SUV and the motorcycle.”

The motorcyclist, a 51-year-old man, was taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center, where he died Wednesday evening, Erland said.

At this time, Erland said, officers do not believe the driver of the SUV was speeding or under the influence. The driver was ticketed for refusing to yield.
