Labor also said there had been “an embarrassing rate of staff turnover” since 2021, when the board was created to replace the two-tier structure of the district and district council.

He said the unitary board was “top-heavy”, with “27 assistant directors all earning over £90,000”.

Brown responded: “This is pure fiction, our employee turnover of 9.5% is significantly below the national average and our previous turnover rates were also in line with expectations.

“This accusation, like many others, reflects the disorganized and opportunistic way in which the Labor group approaches the opposition.

“The number of assistant directors we have is closely aligned with other senior local authorities, confirmed by a recent informal mini-survey, and we have also recently seen reductions in the budget for assistant directors.”
