Former county commissioner accused of child sex in Angelina County

LUFKIN, Texas (KTRE) – A former Angelina County commissioner serving a prison sentence on domestic violence charges and facing child sex abuse charges in Polk County is now preparing for trial in Angelina County.

Robert Garrison Cheshire, 56, of Diboll, is charged with four counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child and one of indecency with a child. Cheshire, a former county commissioner, was last booked into the Angelina County Jail on Aug. 22. On Thursday, he appeared in Angelina County Judge Todd Kassaw’s court for a hearing.

Cheshire has been serving a sentence for persistent violence against a family member since 2019 and was arrested in 2022 on Polk County warrants for aggravated sexual assault of a child.

Cheshire will be selected for jury selection on Monday.

San Jacinto First Assistant District Attorney Rob Freyer spoke to KTRE after the hearing in Cheshire about the details of the case. Freyer is prosecuting the case after the Angelina County district attorney blamed himself.

KTRE has filed Cheshire’s complaint with Angelina County.
