Construction zone security highlighted after deadly incident involving flagger

KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) – With the amount of construction flooding the area, it’s very important to pay attention to your surroundings while driving.

This was highlighted following a deadly incident on Thursday in Lincoln County involving a flagger who was struck by a truck driver.

Construction zones are marked to keep construction workers and drivers safe.

Sergeant Jessi Redden, Traffic Commander, said: “Recognise and definitely watch for signs before entering construction zones because that lets you know, obviously, that there is one up ahead, so it gives you time to slow down.”

Another reminder: Police officers sit in construction zones with their lights on to make sure everyone slows down.

“Then you see the lights and you slow down, it’s just another one of those signs,” Redden said.

Construction zones are frustrating, but as inconvenient as it may be, it’s important to follow the posted speed limit.

“Speed is a big key in work zones,” Redden said.

Sergeant Redden says to keep the road safe while driving, you need to slow down, pay attention to your surroundings, stay off your cell phone and buckle up.
