DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES (KABC) — At least three people were sickened in a hazardous materials incident in downtown Los Angeles Thursday morning, officials said.

Fire paramedics responded to the 300 block of East Second Street shortly after 11:30 a.m. They medically examined several patients who complained of illness “inside and outside an apartment building following their possible exposure to an unspecified substance on a sidewalk,” the Los Angeles Fire Department said in a statement. “No escalating hazard or hazard outside the site has been identified.”

According to LAFD, the substance appeared to be cocaine laced with fentanyl.

Investigators said several police officers were participating in some sort of police activity when the white powder was spilled on a sidewalk outside an apartment in Little Tokyo.

Two people – both civilians – were taken to hospital. The patients’ conditions were not immediately known.

The LAFD’s Hazardous Materials Task Force was called in according to protocol, the fire department said.

An Alhambra Police spokesperson said officers were serving a search warrant at the scene. No other information about the warrant was available and it was unclear whether the case was related to the hazmat incident.

The cause of the patient’s illness was investigated.

Second Street was closed between Central Avenue and San Pedro Street. No estimate was given of when the street would reopen. Drivers were urged to take alternative routes.
