Former Celtic midfielder Tommy Callaghan dies aged 78

Former Celtic midfielder Tommy Callaghan, who played more than 250 times for the club and won six league medals, has died aged 78.

Callaghan joined from Dunfermline Athletic in 1968 and was notable for being the only player Jock Stein signed twice; He also took him to Pars in 1962.

A huge Celtic fan, the Fife native remained at Parkhead for eight years and also won three Scottish Cups and two League Cups, scoring 34 goals before leaving to join Clydebank in 1976.

After he stopped playing he continued to be a regular at Celtic Park as a matchday presenter.

A club statement said: “The thoughts and prayers of everyone at Celtic are with Tommy’s friends and family at this sad time.”
