Shug, the Runaway Zebra, Is Captured in Washington's Backyard

The remaining zebra that was on the run after escaping from a caravan in Washington state has been captured.

The mare, initially misidentified as a stallion, was rescued Friday in Washington after being the only rebel to evade capture since breaking away with her caravan companions on April 28, the services wrote King County Animal Services in a blog post.

The four zebras were being transported from Winlock, Washington, 105 miles south of Seattle, to Anaconda, Montana, when a problem arose with the trailer. The zebra’s owner stopped on Interstate 90 to resolve the problem when the zebras decided to run away, animal services said.

Three members of the rebel crew were located and captured later that day.

However, the mare, whose name is Shug, had other plans.

Freely exploring the area for the next six days, Shug became a viral Internet sensation. People who spotted Shug days before her capture took photos and videos of her. By retaining her personality, Shug proved that she could not be tamed.

Search teams search for Shug, the missing zebra, in Washington

On Friday, animal control officers from King County Regional Animal Services, the Washington State Patrol and many area residents formed search teams to find Shug.

When she was found, Shug was in good condition despite her nearly week-long adventure in the woods, the animal agency said.

Shug was found behind a residence in North Bend

The farmer who found Shug worked to gain his trust by giving him food and fencing off the area, FOX 13 Seattle reported.

A neighbor told the broadcast station that the farmer saw Shug on his lawn, but Shug left the area before authorities arrived.
