On Wednesday, May 15, Hoboken’s Monroe Center will be a sight to behold: residents gathered under the glow of 28-foot-tall electrical structures, hosting individual dance parties in complete silence. In collaboration with QuietEvents, Hoboken Business Alliance (HBA) is hosting its first-ever Silent Disco at 770 Jackson Street beneath the Electric Dandelions art installation. The event runs from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and is free to attend, although RSVP is encouraged. Read on to learn more about the Silent Disco event in Hoboken on May 15.

What there is to know

If you’ve never been to a silent disco event, it’s exactly what it sounds like: Each guest wears a pair of wireless headphones and dances freely to the music playing through the speakers. To spectators or passers-by, these silent parties seem ridiculous, but on the dance floor, they are SO a lot of pleasure.

The Electric Dandelions art installation was installed in Hoboken earlier this year, as part of another HBA initiative. There are a total of 10 dandelions throughout the city – some at Pier A Park, others at Monroe Center – all of which stand 28 feet tall and are made of steel and translucent LED lights. True spectacles of light and movement, the sculptures are the work of artist Abram Santa Cruz and Liquid PXL, an art collective based in Los Angeles.

On Wednesday, May 15, HBA is hosting the Silent Disco event at the Monroe Center from 6-9 p.m. The event is completely free and will feature music from three live DJs covering different musical genres (except for some pop, throwbacks, R&B and Hip-Hop tracks, among others). The headsets are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis and feature a colored LED light that signals which station guests are listening to.

RSVP is not required but is encouraged. Guests under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult and all guests are required to pay a headset deposit (which will be refunded as long as the headsets are returned). You can RSVP here.

“Silent Disco at the Electric Dandelions is a spring celebration that brings public art and self-expression to Hoboken,” said Roxanne Earley, executive director of the Hoboken Business Alliance in a press release. “It’s a celebration of Hoboken’s creative spirit and we invite the community to join us for an unforgettable evening of music and dancing under the stars and dandelions!”
