Coconut Creek Police Chief Albert Arenal Announces Retirement

MIAMI – Another Broward police chief resigns.

Under a cloud of controversy, Coconut Creek Police Chief Albert “Butch” Arenal announced Monday that he is retiring.

Arenal was appointed in 2015.

An independent review of the Arenal Police Department released last week found a “toxic” work environment.

Investigators found low morale within the force, with officers complaining of inappropriate comments and favoritism.

The police union was considering whether to hold a vote of no confidence. Meanwhile, the city will name an interim chief this week.

In March, the embattled police chief of nearby Margate Joe Galaska retired after a vote of no confidence.
