New data finds that rising pop stars like Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter have seen a surge in interest in costumes this spooky season.

Based on Google and TikTok searches calculated in Keyword Tool, searches for famous singers, famous pygmy hippo Moo Deng, and movie characters Salt burn have soared recently, showing that viral pop culture moments are sparking Halloween costume ideas around the world.

UK-based costume retailer Smiffys commissioned the research and also found that Charli XCX, with her trend-setting “Brat summer” style, was also a big inspiration for Halloween this year. Searches for Moo Deng-inspired clothing have increased by 53,900 percent as people look to embrace the trend for one of the most famous faces to be introduced to the world this year.

Even Haliey Welch, aka the “Hawk Tuah” girl, debuted an officially licensed Halloween costume on Spirit Halloween, turning one of the biggest viral moments of the year into a Halloween costume.

While there has been an increase in more creative and new costume ideas, some of the more traditional costumes are still holding up across the country, with the witch, dinosaur, and Spider-Man being the most popular costumes in the US.

Regardless of what costumes people wear this year, there is expected to be a drop in Halloween spending in 2024.

Thanks to rising inflation, consumers were expected to spend about $11.6 billion on Halloween, a slight drop from the $12.2 billion spent the previous year, based on research compiled by Statista .
